Wax is an amazing material. In this hands on workshop we will explore innovative approaches to wax carving with an emphasis on encouraging confidence and creativity. We will explore design; layout; carving; faux granulation; flame techniques; bezels; carving mirror images, contour fit bands, pierced out work, hollowing; finishing, repairing and more. Learn affordable lathe and milling techniques- saving time and improving accuracy. We will be working primarily with Wolf Wax by FerrisTM. There will be live, highly magnified demos of many wax techniques.

For those who have taken a wax carving class with Kate. Emphasis is placed on helping each student take their skills to a higher level. Tricks of the trade, new tools and innovations will be covered. There will be time for tool making and modifying. We will be working with Wolf Wax by FerrisÅ and Cowdery Extrusions. Students are encouraged to bring projects, questions, requests, wise ass comments and jokes.

Counter Sketching/Rendering with Remy Rotenier - 4 days days

Have you ever had a customer who knows what they don't want, but can't communicate what they are looking for? Remy Rotenier teaches design development techniques that make it easy to produce designs that please your customer. This workshop covers the whole process: from making a quick rough sketch through turning it into a wonderful colored drawing without losing its energy. We'll spend two days with pencil- developing sketching skills, learning how to render elements and stones, successfully incorporate concepts into jewelry design. We'll spend two days on color rendering techniques- exploring the use of transparent and opaque water colors, for true to life illustrations of metal and gemstones. We'll also cover special orders- helping the customer through design decisions and preparing customer documents.

Remy Rotenier was born in Paris where he studied jewelry design and gemology. He worked for high end European jewelers until he became one of Tiffany's in house Jewelry Designers in New York. He was Design Director for Kabana for twelve years and opened Remy Design two years ago. He is now an independent Jewelry Designer with prestigious clients across the United States. Remy believes that a successful designer should be a balance of creativity, technical skills and work ethics.
