Wax is an amazing material. In this hands on workshop we will explore innovative approaches to wax carving with an emphasis on encouraging confidence and creativity. We will explore how to transform scribbles into resolved designs; layout; carving bezels for cabochons and facetted stones; channels; flame techniques; carving hollow forms and mirror images; pierced out work, textures, faux granulation; hollowing; finishing, repairing and more. Learn how to rapidly and accurately remove excess material‚ using the flex shaft for affordable lathe and milling processes. We will be working with Wolf Wax by Ferris
TM. There will be live, highly magnified demos of many wax techniques.

We'll cover all the techniques listed above and prongs, contour fit shadow bands, and tool making. Kate will also show some really cool techniques to make soldering much easier. You will definitely benefit from this extra day.
Figurative Carving - 4 days

For those who have taken a wax carving class with Kate. Emphasis is placed on helping each student take their skills to a higher level. Tricks of the trade, new tools and innovations will be covered. There will be time for tool making and modifying. We will be working with Wolf Wax by FerrisÅ and Cowdery Extrusions. Students are encouraged to bring projects, questions, requests, wise ass comments and jokes.

She traveled for a decade selling jewelry throughout the US. Marlene served on numerous boards of directors (currently Society of North American Goldsmiths), consults with emerging artists nationally and internationally; teaches seminars and classes (including at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC); gives speeches, participates on panels; writes articles for jewelry/craft publications including a regular column in Art Jewelry magazine called "Business Savvy." Marlene's new book Profiting by Design is receiving critical acclaim.
Counter Sketching with Remy Rotenier - 4 days

Have you ever had a customer who knows what they don't want, but can't communicate what they are looking for? Remy Rotenier teaches design development techniques that make it easy to produce designs that please your customer. This workshop covers the whole process: from making a quick rough sketch through turning it into a wonderful colored drawing without losing its energy. We'll spend three days with pencil‚ developing sketching skills, learning how to render elements and stones then successfully incorporate concepts into jewelry design. We'll complete 3 view technical drawings. Then we will spend two days on color rendering techniques‚ exploring the use of transparent and opaque water colors, for true to life illustrations of metal and gemstones. We'll also cover special orders‚ helping the customer through design decisions and preparing customer documents.
Remy Rotenier was born in Paris where he studied jewelry design and gemology. He worked for high end European jewelers until he became one of Tiffany's in house Jewelry Designers in New York. He was Design Director for Kabana for twelve years and opened Remy Design two years ago. He is now an independent jewelry designer with prestigious clients across the United States. Remy believes that a successful designer should be a balance of creativity, technical skills and work ethics. Remy is a generous, attentive, and gifted educator.
